I’m not an alcoholic. I’m not a health nut (maybe a little). I just like to experiment and live an unconventional life. I want to do things because they make sense to me, not because everyone does them. So I decided to try not drinking for a while. After a month, I feel more motivated to actually accomplish something. I don’t wake up feeling like a tractor ran over me like I’m a crop of maize to be harvested. I don’t curl up in a pathetic lump in the morning only to be unable to sleep.
I never thought of myself as the popular guy. Needless to say, when I stopped drinking last month I wasn’t better off.
Whenever I’m in a bar with some friends and someone’s going for the next round of drinks, I’ll say Get Me An Iced Tea and they say So A Beer Then and I’d say No Seriously, Get Me An Iced Tea. Then they drop it and they actually get me an Iced Tea much against their will.
Or when I’m holding a non-alcoholic drink and I’m standing there in the bar talking to my friends, there’s always one who jokingly tries to pour some beer in my Iced Tea like it’s the funniest thing ever.
It’s so ingrained in everyday life, which makes Not Drinking Alcohol pretty much social suicide.
Luckily most of my good friends don’t really care what I drink, they just enjoy my company (like it should be).
So let me tell you one thing. If one of your friends stops drinking, don’t be the whiny, insecure pro-alcohol asshole (If You Quit Drinking And I Drink More Than You, Does That Mean I have A Problem??) and just let him enjoy his Iced Tea 🙂
Also, if you’re the one not drinking, don’t be the preachy health nut guy. Just silently enjoy the feeling of complete control 😉
